Boston Schools Superintendent Wins
Top Urban Education Award
WASHINGTON, Oct. 26 – Boston Public Schools Superintendent Thomas Payzant recently received the Richard R. Green Award, the nation’s highest honor for urban education leadership, at the Council of the Great City Schools’ 48th Annual Fall Conference.
The top prize in urban education is given each year by the Council, a coalition of the nation's largest urban public school systems, and ARAMARK, a facility services company. The Green Award is named for the first African American chancellor of the New York City school system, who had also been superintendent of the Minneapolis school district.
Since 1995, Dr. Payzant has led Boston Public Schools with work on high school reform, professional development and family and community engagement. The school system has seen dramatic improvement in student academic performance during his tenure, with increased test scores on both state-mandated tests and SAT college entrance exams.
As the recipient of the Green Award, Dr. Payzant receives a $10,000 college scholarship to present to a high school senior of his choice in the Boston Public Schools or from his high school alma mater.
